People - Plants - Plymouth

Minority ethnicity communities, asylum seekers and refugees in Stonehouse Plymouth. Black, asian and minority ethnicity youth groups and older people experiencing a lack of connection. Communities of the Soil is for these groups to collaboratively design and prepare to implement spaces in the Stonehouse area for growing food, sharing culture and cuisine.

I think this should be  pictures rather than words- a more imaginal slide?

Suspect we can leave this one open as people have lots of things to say to this!

Imagine walking into a new place in an unfamiliar country but smelling spices from home, seeing herbs you recognise, touching plants that have also travelled and are now taking roots in this new soil.

The main space will be the Millfields Trust Genesis Building (235 Union St), home to a creative mix of organisations including important services for asylum seekers and refugees. Diversity Business Incubator has walled garden space with communal access to the DBI meeting space. We have the support of the Trust to work with specific spaces in this complex indoors and outdoors.

Approximately 1 acre of flat land at Stonehouse Creek (PL1 3SR) is also owned by Millfields Trust and is available to the project, adjacent to a primary school with a large population of BAME children.

Jabulani is the Food Court (80-84 Union Street) which supports local BAME food entrepreneurs.

Adjacent to this we have the Housing Association accommodation with garden spaces which offer rich potential for food/growing spaces.

Finally the project will include Huxhams Cross Farm in Dartington which is a biodynamic farm linking rural farming and nature spaces with this urban project.

  • The aims and objectives of the land use planning process that we are embarking on.
  • Do you have a vision for the land over the next 5/10/15 or 20 years ?
  • What are your core values?
  • Functions of the land ( ie what do you want it to DO ?)
  • Events wanted / needed / desired
    • How often
    • How many people
    • How long
    • What will they need ? – car parks, toilets, hand washing, shelter, seating, cooking outdoors, etc
  • Elements or Things you need / want / desire
    • The Elements are the  new “things “that you want to have on the farm, this might be trees, crops, shed, barn, social space, cooking space …..Can you rank these as needs, wants and desires,
  • Visual – what do you want it to look like ?
    • If there are any places that you love or would like to emulate, can you list them ?
  • Feelings level – what do you want it to feel like?
  • Are there any important Cultural links and ties to the land ?
  • Monetary financial needs for income ?
    • This might not be formulated yet, but “needs to pay for itself” might be sufficient at this point, or does it also need to generate an income for you ?
  • Constraints – Are you in  the National Park ? If so , we need to be aware of what these are.
